McKibben outlines climate change effects -NOT

The Lexington Global warming action coalition posted their first three misconceptions.
Boy, are they misconceptions!

Their first, correctly titled
1. Scientists are divided

Consensus is a word that scientist don't own. By its very nature, Science questions everything, but having said that, the US senate lists 650 scientist that are sceptical to the IPCC view:
http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Files.View&FileStore_id=83947f5d-d84a-4a84-ad5d-6e2d71db52d9

31,072 American scientists, including 9,021 with PhDs, have signed this petition, found at
http://www.petitionproject.org/

acknowledging that they are sceptics

Whilst the IPCC ARIV was produced by less than 100 scientists mainly without peer-review and disregarding dissenting opinion from some of the writers.

Lexington's second point, correctly titled

2. We have time
Starts The melting Arctic ice will help speed up global warming.
Except the Arctic ice is a great as it was in 1980, the Antarctic Ice volume is growing and Greenland permafrost is growing, so, yes, We have time.

The third point is so stupid, I won't bother to address it!

The Groundhog named Gore by Alan Caruba

On Alan Caruba's blog, he writes

"The ability to hold two totally opposite thoughts in one’s head, a winter storm and imminent destruction by sizzling hot weather, is a kind of schizophrenia or just plain stupidity. In Gore’s case, it has a lot more with lining his pockets with millions of dollars in the sale of “carbon credits” purchased to continue emitting carbon dioxide, the gas that Gore insists will destroy the world.

Carbon dioxide is the gas on which all plant life on Earth depends for growth. Without CO2 every single piece of vegetation dies and we die with it because a lot of critters we eat are herbivores. Happily, humans exhale about two pounds of CO2 every day. Burning anything, including calories, produces CO2. Even if there is more CO2, it has little to do with climate change."

Pre-election President Obama said that, when elected, he would declare CO2 a "dangerous pollutant." No more bread, cakes, wine, beer. When will this stupidity end?

DOOM! 4 years left - Last Chance- Jim Hansen

After making doom and gloom predictions for years, (we should all be dead by now) Jim Hansen has made another.

Mark this date - Sunday 18 January 2009.

'We have only four years left to act on climate change - America has to lead' Quote from Hansen.

"(Obama's) four-year administration offers the world a last chance to get things right, Hansen said. If it fails, global disaster - melted sea caps, flooded cities, species extinctions and spreading deserts - awaits mankind."

melted sea caps?? Does this mean melted ice caps when both poles have more ice now than 1980?

Flooded cities?? A paper by Cazenave et al (http://sciences.blogs.liberation.fr/home/files/Cazenave_et_al_GPC_2008.pdf) can be summarised as follows :
since 2003, sea level has continued to rise but with a rate (2.5+/-0.4 mm/yr) somewhat reduced compared to the 1993-2003 decade (3.1+/-0.4mm/yr).

So, at the rate of the latest decade, the rise over a full century would be ~254mm or,even by using the previous decade's rate, over a full century the rise would be ~310mm.

Less than a third of a metre, around one foot in the old currency!

How many cities will be flooded in the next 100 years? Even more importantly, Mr Hansen, how many cities will be flooded in the NEXT FOUR YEARS?

Hudson Air Crash Caused by Global Warming - NOT

Time Magazine ( I used to get Time every week and respected the articles found in it!) blamed the bird-strike that brought down an Airbus passenger aircraft in the Hudson River, New York, on "global warming".

Christopher Monckton on Right Side News put out a more realistic argument.

"The Time article said that "Wildlife mitigation" was the official term for avoiding bird strikes. A report published in June 1988 by the Federal Aviation Administration had found that since 1990 the number of bird strikes had quadrupled, from 1,759 in 1990 to a record 7,666 in 2007. According to Time, "Officials cite a number of possible causes for the increase", including "habitat destruction and climate change", which "have disrupted migratory patterns". Time adds, "Al Gore should be very proud of himself."
The truth: As the article also points out (though not in the headline), most commercial airlines are replacing three-engine and four-engine aircraft with twin-engine aircraft. The newer engines are quieter, so birds are less likely to detect and avoid them. Also, aircraft with fewer engines are less able to survive bird-strikes."

Lord Monckton lists the 7 worst fatalities due to bird strike. They occurred in Oct 60(Boston); Nov 62 (Maryland); Sept88 (Ethiopia); Apl90 (Off Panama); Sept95 (Alaska); Apl2000 (Congo); Jan07 (France).

"The geographical spread of the bird strikes shows that there is no basis whatever for the suggestion that "global warming" has aggravated the problem. Bird strikes have occurred in all parts of the globe, from the tropics to the Arctic, and they have involved birds of all kinds. Birds, like most species on earth, are necessarily tolerant of different climates. This tolerance of varying temperatures is essential to survival, since the temperature difference between a summer's day and a winter's night, in the same location, can be at least 100 times greater than the 0.74 °C (1.3 °F) difference between mean global surface temperature 100 years ago and today."

Another spurious article incorrectly attributing something unrelated to (anthropogenic) global warming?

"Al Gore, mentioned with approval in Time's article, complains in the entertaining fiction book that accompanies his inaccurate movie An Inconvenient Truth, that pied flycatchers can no longer hatch at the right time to feed their young on the customary species of caterpillar, which "hatch two weeks earlier after 20 years of ‘global warming'". He is careful not to point out that "global warming" has been happening not for 20 years but for 300. He is also careful not to point out that, even if the caterpillars were indeed becoming available a couple of weeks later in the year than previously, the birds would merely have to fly a few miles further north to find caterpillars that hatched at a more convenient moment.

Australian Budget Deficit

Today Mr KRudd admitted that the budget would go into deficit. (Click on headline for link.)

Well, Go-lee, "Kev 08 is not so great."

Budget (that is estimated) deficit was $20B, then this was re-assessed to $5B. In the meantime, Heavy Spending Kevie promised $10B. Let's see, $5B-$10B= -$5B.

Minus 5 billion dollars.

Gee, I think that's a deficit, ja ne?
